Walter M. Hoover (Duluth BC, Minnesota) In 1922, one day after winning the Philadelphia Gold Challenge Cup (the single sculls championship trophy) Walter Hoover embarked for England to compete at the Henley Royal Regatta. He won two heats advancing to defeat England's Jack Beresford in the final. Hoover was the second American to win the race, and the first in 22 years. After retiring as a competitive sculler in 1928, Hoover coached rowers from the Detroit Boat Club. In 1956, he was the coach of the U.S. Olympic rowing team's small boats. His five teams won two gold medals (M2-, M2+), two silver medals (M2X, M4-) and one bronze medal (M1X) at the Olympic regatta in Melbourne.
