The New London Boat Race
or Yale-Harvard Boat Race is
an annual contest between M8+
crews of Harvard University
and Yale University. First rowed
in 1852, it is America's oldest
athletic competition.
The coloured drawing shows
an incident during the 1890
race when the Yale stroke
broke his oar and dove over-
board. Yale still won the race.
Before the introduction of World Cup regattas (1997) the International regatta at Lucerne was the highlight of the season - only topped by the WRC or ERC in autumn. Whereas in ROWING normally only the winner gets a medal Lucerne made an exception and rewarded medals for the athletes of the second boats in the finals.
